The CS Primer Show
Oz and Charlie talk about computer science and computer science education, again
After a three year hiatus, we’re back with a new podcast slash YouTube thing: The CS Primer Show.
If you’re into computer science — and learning about it! — you may already know Oz Nova from his intensive online programs at Bradfield School of Computer Science or his popular open alternative teachyourselfcs.com.
Oz recently launched his latest online CS educational venture called CS Primer and it’s really, really good. CS Primer is like having your own personal Aristotle-slash-Oz teaching you computer science. I’m loving it so far, and I think lots of other people will, too. The first lesson has me encoding and decoding varints used by the protobuf spec. Neat!
Is CS Primer the beginnings of the next Khan Academy? Is it the beginnings of the Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer? Is it something else entirely new? Or is it just the best damn way to actually learn what’s going on with your computer? Don’t answer that — just give it a try yourself.
As far as our show goes, I am but Oz’s humble student, and our show will cover things related to learning computer science and, knowing our mutual interests, probably a whole lot of computer science history.
AKA we’re gonna talk about Bell Labs, a lot.
Here’s episode one, ostensibly centered around the You and Your Research talk by Dick Hamming (of Bell Labs!):
